Namma Metro, Bengaluru’s rapid transit system, is the second-longest operational metro network in India. As of April 2025, it spans 76.95 km with 68 stations, including 59 elevated, 8 underground, and 1 at-grade. Managed by the Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), the system commenced operations in 2011.
Operational Lines and Services
The network currently operates the Purple and Green Lines. Trains run daily from 5:00 AM to 11:00 PM, with frequencies between 3 to 15 minutes. Each six-coach train is powered by a 750V DC third rail, reaching speeds up to 80 km/h.
Ridership Trends
In January 2025, Namma Metro recorded an average daily ridership of approximately 800,000 passengers. Following a fare hike in February 2025, ridership dropped by about 13%, with daily usage falling to around 710,000. This decrease was most notable among students and low-income commuters who shifted to other transportation options.
Expansion Plans
Significant expansions are underway:
- Yellow Line: Connecting Rashtreeya Vidyalaya Road to Bommasandra over 18.82 km with 16 elevated stations, targeting key hubs like Electronic City. Opening is expected by May 2025 due to delays in train procurement.
- Pink Line: Stretching 21.25 km from Kalena Agrahara to Nagawara with 18 stations. The first phase to Tavarekere is expected to open by December 2025, and the full stretch by December 2026.
- Blue Line: Planned to link Central Silk Board to Kempegowda International Airport via Krishnarajapura and Hebbal. This 58.19 km corridor with 32 stations is expected to be operational by June 2026.
- Phase 3: Approved in 2024, this phase will add two new lines covering 44.65 km and 31 stations. Construction is projected to begin by late 2025 and complete in the early 2030s.
Future Outlook
Namma Metro plays a crucial role in solving Bengaluru’s traffic congestion and supporting sustainable urban mobility. With ongoing and upcoming expansions, it is set to connect more residential, commercial, and industrial areas, enhancing the overall infrastructure and livability of the city.
