Vidhana Soudha, one of the most prominent landmarks in Bengaluru, serves as the seat of the state legislature of Karnataka. Located on Dr. Ambedkar Road, opposite Cubbon Park, it is not only an architectural marvel but also a symbol of democratic governance in the state. The foundation stone was laid by then Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru in 1951, and the building was completed in 1956 under the leadership of Chief Minister Kengal Hanumanthaiah.
Constructed primarily using granite, Vidhana Soudha exemplifies neo-Dravidian architecture with elements of Indo-Saracenic and Dravidian styles. The structure measures over 700 feet in length and 350 feet in width, rising to a height of around 150 feet at its central dome. The massive staircase at the entrance features 45 granite steps, leading up to the portico supported by giant pillars.
The building houses both the Karnataka Legislative Assembly and the Legislative Council, along with several ministerial departments. The central dome bears the Ashoka emblem and is flanked by four smaller domes at the corners, adding to its regal presence. More than 5,000 laborers and 1,500 chisellers, masons, and wood-carvers contributed to its construction, which cost around ₹1.75 crore at the time.
While public access to the interiors is restricted for security reasons, the building is often admired from the outside, especially in the evenings when it is beautifully lit. It is a favored spot for visitors interested in history, politics, and architecture.
Vidhana Soudha is situated approximately 14 kilometers from Prestige Avon on Thanisandra Road, making it easily accessible for a short drive or city tour.
