Bangalore Palace is a majestic symbol of the city’s royal heritage and architectural splendor. Located in the Vasanth Nagar area, this iconic structure was built in 1874 by Chamarajendra Wadiyar, the then Maharaja of Mysore. Inspired by England’s Windsor Castle, the palace combines elements of Tudor Revival and Gothic architecture, making it one of Bengaluru’s most distinguished landmarks.
Historical Background
The land on which the palace stands was originally purchased in 1873 from Rev. J. Garrett, the first principal of Central High School (now Central College). Construction began shortly after and was completed in 1878. The palace served as a residence for the Wadiyar royal family and has remained an important symbol of Karnataka’s monarchical legacy.
Architectural Marvel
Covering 45,000 square feet, Bangalore Palace features fortified towers, wooden interiors, stained glass windows, and intricately carved ceilings. The grand Durbar Hall—designed for royal assemblies—is one of its most striking features, adorned with Belgian chandeliers, ornate cornices, and a raised platform for performances and royal addresses.
The interiors also boast:
-
Imported furniture in Victorian, neo-classical, and Edwardian styles
-
Iconic paintings from Raja Ravi Varma
-
A gallery of photographs, trophies, and personal artifacts of the royal family
Cultural and Event Hub
Over the years, Bangalore Palace has evolved into a vibrant venue for cultural and entertainment events. The palace grounds regularly host music concerts, art exhibitions, private functions, and even movie shoots. International artists like Elton John, The Rolling Stones, and Metallica have performed here, adding to its global cultural appeal.
